Traveling Light Makes All the Difference
It’s pretty easy to go overboard when packing for tropical vacations. Everyone has fallen into the pit trap of being too anxious about not having the right shoes for the perfect function, or not packing for enough underwear to cover for the trip. If you’ve gone on tropical vacations before, you know how overpacking can be a problem once you disembark on that boat or plane; you end up with plenty of straw hats and scarves, not to mention enough spare clothes to make a return trip. If you’ve learned your lesson well, you know that the key to stress-free tropical vacations is to bring enough without packing too much. How do you do it? With planning, and little bit of common sense.
Bathing suits are staples of tropical vacations, and you have to bring two or three of these for your trip. If you are willing to shell out more money for bathing suits which you otherwise have plenty of at home, then the resort or hotel is very willing to accommodate you. Even if you are not keen on swimming, the ambiance and opportunities for such are irresistible with tropical vacations, and you will be tempted to wear suits almost everyday, even if you only intend to lounge by the beach. Shoes are either a necessity or an unnecessary evil in tropical vacations; but if part of your itinerary includes hiking or private functions, you can bring two pairs max, rubber and formal shoes.
If you’re not by the beach snorkeling, you’ll probably be sightseeing or bargain-hunting. Tropical vacations wouldn’t be complete with the ubiquitous pair of walking shorts. Don’t bring too much though; three pairs are enough, just make sure that they are in neutral colors. You can pair them with colored shirts, and nobody will be able to notice or even care about the stains and dirt creases which are inevitable with tropical vacations. Sandals are indispensable, since these will be your staple footwear for the entire trip. You don’t need more than a pair; just choose a comfortable pair with very sturdy straps. If you’re bringing a couple of pairs of shoes on the trip, wear the bulkier one at the airport so you’ll have enough space to pack more stuff.
Even though tropical vacations call for casual wear, sometimes you can’t avoid a function which requires strictly formal attire. You can’t spare on formal clothes, so bring your best suit, or an elegant cocktail dress, especially for tropical vacations which are taken on a cruise. Denims are off limits to cruise ship dining areas, and you’ll need formal attire for the social functions. And do keep in mind that tropical vacations can’t do without souvenirs. If you’re thinking about packing that wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, keep in mind that you’ll be enticed to purchase them at bargain shops in your next destination. And because trinkets can stack up on tropical vacations, ease some of your luggage load by wearing some of the souvenirs on your return trip; it’ll serve as immediate proof that you’ve been there and done that.
